All surgery was cancelled and hundreds of medical instruments were tested after a potential case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was discovered at a hospital in London, Ont.
Officials at the London Health Sciences Centre scrambled yesterday to allay public concerns about the case, releasing four statements through the day and stressing that "these measures are precautionary . . . the risk of infection is extremely low."
Still, they moved fast to minimize the possible spread of infection after learning that tissues taken from a patient who had surgery last week at the University Hospital were raising concerns about CJD, a fatal disease that affects the central nervous system.
